What does Nearcast show?
Wildfires, evacuations (currently strongest for British Columbia), Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), and fire-weather context, filtered to the provinces and places you choose.
Is Nearcast official?
No. Nearcast is independent and unofficial. It aggregates public Canadian open data to help you stay aware. Always defer to official sources during an emergency.
Do you track my location?
No continuous live GPS tracking. You save places you care about; optional address lookup may resolve a city or address to coordinates when you add a place. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Why didn’t I get a phone alert?
Nearcast uses local notifications evaluated when the app refreshes live feeds. They are not Alert Ready and may not arrive if the app has not refreshed recently, if notifications are disabled, or if the hazard is outside your selected regions / alert types / watch radius.
How do Places work?
Add home, family, or travel spots under Places. Nearcast watches for hazards within each place’s radius. Tap a place to open the map focused on that area, or share a summary via Messages or Mail.
Can I change the look of the app?
Yes. In Settings, choose Appearance (System / Light / Dark) and a Color theme. Canada (maple red) is the default.
Where does the data come from?
Open public sources such as CWFIS, provincial open data, ECCC GeoMet AQHI, and related weather products. Open Sources in the app for the feeds behind each region.
Evacuations look incomplete outside B.C.
Evacuation polygons are currently ingested from British Columbia open data. National fire and AQHI coverage is broader; provincial evacuation layers will expand over time.
